Winter landscapes in the Netherlands, January 2009

If there is one thing the Dutch take pride in it must have something to do with water. Only once in 10 years or so temperatures drop during a week or more to make iceskating possible and freeze a lake like IJselmeer. When day temperature climbs above 0 ice kreeps up the shores of the IJselmeer. Combine that with a storm and walking dunes of ice are formed. The other possiblility is that weather stays reasonable calm to form an endless watery ice plane that mirrors the sky. A few days later the island of Marken was flocked with birds.
